Perhaps Today Is The Day
Perhaps Today is the Day
by Ron Chelsvig
A gathering of crows just flew inconspicuously over the rooftops of nearby homes in the quiet of morning.
They were headed west, northwest in a swift but controlled speed.
I gazed up, just happening to see them, through lightly-patterned off-white curtains, past the outside regal sunflowers, sturdy treetops and illusive ethers,
just at the right moment.
I only saw them in a glance as they flew by (as crows do).
But this felt different.
Something was happening.
Something IS happening!
I wanted to join them.
To see as they see.
To fly as they fly.
To go where they were going.
But I’m stuck here in this man’s body, wrapped in a towel, sleepily drinking coffee as I write a letter to a dear friend.
I wish my feathered brothers and sisters success in their mission!
Fly steady!
You are drawing near!
Perhaps today is the day you will converge and disappear with Simorgh.
It feels like it!
Doesn’t it?
Even the sunflowers seem to understand and smile
knowingly.

* The Simorgh, like the Phoenix, is a mythical bird first written about in ancient Persian culture. It is thought to be so big, it can carry off an elephant! It is said to be so old that it has seen the destruction of the world three times.
In a lengthy poem, “The Conference of the Birds,” written by the saintly Attar, the journey to the Simorgh is the ultimate journey for those searching for the answer to what life is truly about.
I know the answer, but won’t spoil it for you here.
